The Yavapai Library Network has begun its implementation of the SirsiDynix Symphony software. This software will handle all aspects of automated library services including circulation, cataloging, catalog access, acquisitions, debt collection, and reporting.
The selection process began in early 2008 and culminated when a contract was signed with SirsiDynix on June 1, 2009. After the contract was signed the process of migrating from the SirsiDynix Classic Dynix software to the Symphony software began. The YLN should conclude the migration to the new software on March 17, 2010 at which time staff will begin using the new software and patrons will enjoy a new online catalog. The decision to switch to a new system was easy given that the Classic Dynix software has not received an upgrade in several years since the SirsiDynix Corporation announced the product would reach its "end of life" soon. Once a piece of software reaches the "end of life" it will no longer be supported by the vendor. Given the specialized nature of library automation software vendor support is necessary to keep it running properly. SirsiDynix has announced that the only Integrated Library System it will continue to improve is the Symphony software even though they continue to support other legacy software. The announcement from SirsiDynix can be found here. |
