The Yavapai Library Network and the Prescott Public Library completed an upgrade to a faster Internet connection. The upgrade was made possible through interdepartmental cooperation with the City of Prescott and Yavapai County.
The newer, faster connection has been online now for a couple of weeks. The improved connection was installed to meet the increasing demands of Prescott Public Library customers and the members of the Yavapai Library Network. Formerly the connection was a combination of two DS-1s working together to provide approximately 3 Mbps of bandwidth. The decision was made to upgrade the lines once PPL's contract with Qwest expired. The new connection provides 15 times the capacity of the previous connections. This upgrade affects all access points to the Internet from the library including wireless. The primary reason for the upgrade was ease proliferating connection congestion and to increase bandwidth for a few years to come. Larger Internet connections are becoming increasingly necessary as the public uses the Internet to access an increasing number of multimedia websites. |
