The Yavapai Library Network, the City of Prescott, and the Prescott Public Library will be greatly expanding Internet access to YLN services.
Technically speaking, the current connection in to and out of the Prescott Public Library (the home of the Yavapai Library Network) will be upgraded from two DS-1s to one DS-3. This will increase available internet bandwidth to 15x the current capacity. The impact will be faster service to all YLN libraries with fewer disconnects. Prescott Public Library patrons will also enjoy faster searching while using computers available to them from within the downtown library. The cost to the Yavapai Library Network and the Prescott Public Library will also be less then what they are currently paying. In other words, this necessary expansion of Internet bandwidth has no downside to it. There will be some downtime when the lines are upgraded but it should only impact library operations slightly. Estimates are that the Internet will be down for about an hour (if everything goes as planned). |
